Shea Moisture's Deep Treatment Masque - Can it truly make a difference?

Call it Mask or Masque, this is one area in the hair industry that still hasn't found its Queen. Shea Moisture's intense treatment mask has tried to tap into this gap with its rich concoction of Raw Shea Butter, Sea Kalp and Argan Oil. After sustaining in the US market for decades, Shea Moisture is slowly making its way into the British scene with its natural selection. I was all excited to try this all natural, buttery goodness and restore some lustre to my balayage.

The mask has a non-greasy creamy texture to it which is easily applicable using fingers. Its sulphate free and has a subtly floral yet earthy smell, so the 30 - 40 minutes of leave-in time whizzes by without you scrunching your nose. The final effect varied based on the duration of the treatment. A quick 5 mins did not do much for the moisture but 35 minutes seemed to get the desired softness and my hair looked balanced and less damaged.  I later realised its NOT a conditioner on it own (light bulb!), so you use it after the usual shampoo and condition routine, on towel dried hair. A lot of users suggest sealing the masque with coconut or extra virgin olive oil, along with slight heat to help the moisture penetrate deeper into the strands. I normally use the Alchemy Grapefruit Hair Remedy oil before every wash, so I skipped that step.

Shea Moisture's Deep Treatment Masque has a lot of things working in its favour - organic ingredients, delightful natural scent, nourishing oils including Avocado, Japanese honey suckle and Vitamin E to name a few. Only concern is the variability in results - 5 mins left my hair parched, while 35 mins left them soft but quiet limpy until the next wash (flat hair panic mode = On). In my opinion, Shea Moisture's Deep treatment mask would work wonders on dense curls and afro hair as originally targeted by Grandma Sofi (the mama behind the brand). This product will give thick, wavy and generous hair, the right TLC without the loss of volume. For £8.66 its definitely worth a try to tame curly tresses with a generous 340g tub from Boots.
