We all want to protect ourselves from ageing skin, but sunscreen is a real hassle when you wear makeup or just don't want to stick like glue.
A lot of products have false promises, yet we keep falling for it. That's why today I am listing my all time favourites and also the products I've tried and that I think should be avoided like the plague:
The best products:
1. SPF compact powder
If you haven't adjusted your makeup to your tan yet, you can purchase a compact spf powder in a deeper shade. This way you hit two birds with one stone: your face finally looks the same as your body, without the need for darker foundation, and you are also protecting your skin from UV rays. Because we blot and touch up with powders throughout the day, a powder with SPF is the best option for the face. Although foundation and powder already protect against UV as they are, a bit of UV protective powder can't hurt. One product I could recommend is Clinique Sun SPF Mineral Powder (€ 28,50) and Avène Couvrance Mosaique Powder with SPF
2. Primers with SPF
These primers allow you to use your regular makeup without getting a sun burn. One product I found was the Darphin Intral Protective Primer
3. Light spray with SPF50
Don't worry, you'll still get a nice tan with SPF50. By using a light mist spray, you are making it easier for yourself to apply sunscreen. Some sprays I can recommand are Vichy Capital Soleil Hydrating Mist SPF50 and the Garnier Solaire Dry Mist SPF50.
4. Aftersun
Aftersun does not protect from UV rays, but will heal your skin after tanning. It will take away the glowing pain. If you have too much pain, dab with cold water first. Consult a doctor you are burned too much. I like the Vichy SOS Balm and the Lierac Sunissime Repair SOS Serum
5. Sunscreen sticks
A stick is quite easy to manage and won't make your hands all messy. The product is already rubbed open so no need to work it in. For example try the Uriage Bariésun Stick Mineral SPF50.
The worst products:
1. Foundation with SPF
Rarely do foundations contain more than 10 SPF. The Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation, the best foundation in the world in my opinion, comes with SPF 10, which isn't enough, especially since SPF stops working after a couple of hours and you rarely re-apply foundation during the day, but these SPF factors are alright for cloudy days and are certainly a nice extra when combined with a SPF powder or primer. If you still wanna do this, then try Avène Sun Compact Cream with SPF50. You have to use it like a sunscreen, meaning you should reapply throughout the day.
2. UV powder foundation
These powders are very comedogenic, they look so cakey and end up looking oily throughout the day, especially in summer, meaning you will need another powder to blot, which will then ruin the SPF protection. Also, you don't want to keep building up the product for more and more UV protection.
3. Sunscreen underneath makeup
I tried matte UV creams as a base, before makeup, and it is just so heavy to rub open and it ruins my makeup. If you want to tan your face while it's bare, so without make-up, these products are ok, but they are not suitable at all if you want to wear makeup while being protected against UV.
4. Sunscreen oils
Whoever invented sunscreen in oil form is evil. Oils are so uncomfortable on the skin. They never dry, and stick to sand! They also make skin look even more slick and make you feel like you are frying.
5. Roll-on sunscreen
I thought a roller would save me sticky hands which is sooo annoying when you are on the beach with limited water and towels. When you apply sunscreen with a roller, no one tells you that you will still have to rub it open. Not only does it take forever to apply sunscreen all over this way, it also hurts around the chin, the ankels and spine. You may even miss spots, which makes all the effort for nothing.
6. Brush on SPF powder
You can't tell if and where you have actually covered your face with this loose powder. It also seems too light in coverage.
