The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is composed by more a less 8000 members in a total of 17 branches. Every branch nominate and pick the winners of a certain field (the Actors branch pick the 4 acting categories, directors pick Best Director, writers pick Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay and Documentary pick Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short Subject, for example), but all the branches have a vote for Best Picture!
And that's why the guild awards are so important! Despite not being as selective as the Academy in terms of membership, the guild awards mirror a certain branch's most popular film! In every category, the nominee with most votes wins the Oscar - but not in Best Picture! There's a thing called: preferential balloting! It means, AMPAS members rank the Best Picture nominees for #1 choice to (in this year's case) #9.... and Best Picture winner must have 50% of votes for Best Picture +1 - and it goes for rounds! If in the first round no film gets half of the votes, then they will look to #2 votes, then #3 votes and so on until a Best Picture scores more than 50% of the votes.
Right now, only 3 movies have scored a nomination from every American Guild awards: Parasite, The Irishman and Jojo Rabbit have all scored PGA, DGA, SAG for Ensemble and a WGA award nominations, while other notorious Best Picture contenders missed at least 1: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood missed WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay because it was considered ineligible AND 1917 is a one-man show (well, a two-men show) and it missed the SAG Award nomination for Best Ensemble.
